There are many refreshing and fun ways to add vibrancy to your appearance over the holidays. Many of us enjoy the idea of a buying glitzy new outfits, trying a fun new hairstyle, or even getting lash extensions to amp up the glam, while others find the idea of a style update intimidating and more of a chore.
Let's face it, some people are just plain shy about changing the way they look, and others who perhaps don’t know where to begin. It’s also understandable that a style update might be the very last thing on someone's to-do list when they are just trying to get through the demands of the holidays, what with shopping, family obligations, cooking, party-planning, and let's not forget the strain it can be on finances.
To be honest, change can be difficult for a lot of people, especially in regard to their appearance and how they present themselves to others. The way we look really affects the way people respond to us. For some, this can be a really uncomfortable experience, even when the reaction is a positive one.
When it comes to updating your style for the holidays, it need not be a chore. I am here to tell you that it can be fun, easy and inexpensive to update your style. If you are neither ready, willing or able to take on the burden of yet another thing to think about this holiday season, then trying a new lipstick shade could be all it takes to give your look a fresh new vibe this holiday season. Here are my five tips for choosing a lipstick shade to freshen up your look for the holidays.
1. Be Daring & Try Something New
If you want to change your look you have to try something new, and even be a little daring. Instead of leaning back on your petal pink, or the safety of your reliable nude, why not push your limits and try something a bit bolder, brighter and exciting? Instead, opt for a deep winterberry shade, or a Christmas red for fun. If you are a bit shy about going for that much color so soon, then try a lip-gloss in your shade of choice. Gloss goes on less boldly, and while it’s not as ‘in your face’ as lipstick is, it will bring the lick of color needed to brighten up your style. I am also partial to gloss because it's very easy to wear, and is more forgiving than lipstick. The application of gloss requires a lot less precision and effort than that of a creamier lipstick. The holidays are a time of glamour, glitz and glam, so go ahead, let that brighter, bolder energy out!
2. Choose a Color You Like....And Feel Comfortable Wearing
A color you like is not necessarily a color you feel comfortable wearing. I have experienced this so often when choosing and wearing lipstick shades. For example, I love a vampy deep dark shade, however when I put it on it doesn't always look that great. Some of those deep shades make me look pale, washed out, they tend to shrink my lips and are not flattering. Something to note too is that it’s not always the color that is the issue, the suitability of a lipstick also has plenty to do with the texture and the finish of the lipstick as well. You might feel that a high shine, wet lipstick looks amazing, it can be too glam and high maintenance for daytime wear. While a matte lipstick is modern and super trendy, it can sometimes look dull, flat and lacking shine. Mattes can often feel dry too, making them uncomfortable to wear all day, especially in cooler weather. It all depends on you, how you feel, and what you want to wear. The right lipstick is not only a color that you like that’s flattering, but one that is also easy to wear, comfortable and easy to maintain throughout the day. If you want to be extra daring, then consider something with a glittery finish too, if you want a bit of extra pizazz for the season. Glitter glosses and lipsticks are fun because they reflect light, creating the illusion of a fuller, more luscious lip. Don't be shy, give it a try!
3. Know Your Undertone
Choose your lipstick shade according to the undertone of your skin and you are guaranteed a flattering result. To find out your undertone, check the veins on your wrist. If you see blue veins, you are cool-toned. If they are green or olive colored, then you are warm toned. If you see a mix of both, then your undertone is neutral and you'd suit both warm and cool shades of makeup. As a rule, it is best to match your undertone in the shade of lipstick you wear. For example, if you have cool undertones, then lip shades with cool undertones, such as mauves, purples and reds with blue undertones (think MAC Russian Red) would suit you best. If you have warm undertones, look for shades with orange tones in them. Peaches, corals and reds with orange undertones would work for you.
Our Lipstick Obsession shades have been created with your undertones in mind. We have two reds, one warm and one cool to suit all ranges of skin tones. Our ICON shade is our cool red which is a classic cherry red with cool, blue undertones, while our A-LISTER shade is the warmer brick red shade with orange undertones. We also have two nudes, a warm and a cool one. The warmer nude is IT GIRL shade which is a warmer nude with peachy undertones, while INFLUENCER is the cooler of the two with more mauve undertones. If you have a neutral undertone, a wide range of shades will work for you so you can choose your shades based more on your taste than skin tone suitability.
4. Refer To Seasonal Trends
A good place to begin finding your new lip color is to look into the current trends. It is fun to follow trends because whichever shade you choose, you know it will be fresh, modern, current and on point. Isn't that what a style makeover is all about, updating your look? If you are not into red, but still want to be current for the season, then consider a deep berry, plum or mauve shade. Mauves are on trend for winter 2023 and pair really nicely with a neutral brown, or champagne shimmer eyeshadow. This is great because not only are these shades lovely to wear, but there is such a diverse range to choose from with different textures and finishes. Depending on the shade and finish you choose, you can wear anything from a deep sensual look, to a lighter, sheer, more playful and youthful look. Check out our Lipstick Obsession shades Passion, Queen, Fashionista and Rock Royalty if you want to be on trend by sporting a beautiful plummy, berry or mauve stained pout this holiday season.
5. There Are Many Ways To Wear One Lipstick
After you find the lip shade that’s right for you, the last thing to keep in mind is that you can wear it in a variety of ways just by switching up the way you apply it. This changes your look depending on how it's applied. Try sheering the lipstick out by applying a balm or gloss before you apply. This will create a light daytime glossy effect. You can also try dotting the lipstick onto the center of your lips, then blurring it out with a clean fluffy shadow brush for a long lasting stained lip look. An ombre effect is another trendy and easy to wear lipstick style. Try accentuating the corners of your lips with a darker shade of lip liner and applying your lipstick in the center. Lastly, you can of course apply your lipstick straight from the bullet for a high impact, long lasting, bold, full-coverage color.
